BULLIARD (Pierre). Histoire des plantes vénéneuses et suspectes de la France. Paris: imprimerie de Monsieur, l'auteur, Didot jeune, Barrois le jeune, Belin, 1784. - In-folio, dark green half calf with corners, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (19th century binding). "First edition of the volume of text published to accompany the first 85 plates of Pierre Bulliard's (1752-1793) "Herbier de la France", a veritable inventory of "the indigenous plants of this kingdom; with their properties and uses in medicine", to which the author and artist devoted 13 years of his life from 1780 to 1793, but which remained unfinished. "The principal object of this work is to make known certain plants, whose use could become the source of some more or less serious accidents; to warn about the kind of danger to which each of these plants exposes; to indicate the signs proper to such or such kind of poisoning, & to teach then the most prompt & effective means of remedying the accidents caused by vegetable poisons, both inside and outside." (title). This work could be purchased separately, with or without the plates. This copy is complete with 85 plant plates, drawn and engraved by Bulliard himself, and colored "by means of printing", i.e. using the poupée system, a technique developed by the Dutchman Johannes Teyler, which was also used by the "Raphael of flowers" Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Spine faded, some wear. Scattered foxing."
