BOUGAINVILLE (Louis Antoine de). Voyage autour du monde, par la frégate La Boudeuse et La Flute l'étoile En 1766, 1767, 1768 & 1769. New expanded edition. Neuchâtel: Imprimerie de la Société Typographique, 1773. - 2 parts in one volume in-12, marbled basane, ornate spine, red edges (period binding). "O'Reilly, Reitman, "Bibliographie de Tahiti et de la Polynésie française", no. 290. New edition, the first in-12, published two years after the original, of the report of the first scientific voyage around the world by a ship under the flag of the King of France. This circumnavigation took place from November 1766 to March 1769. Bougainville's objective was to cross the Pacific between the Strait of Magellan and the Philippines, then return via the Indian Ocean. The expedition also saw the participation of astronomer Pierre-Antoine Véron, in charge of determining the longitude of the places discovered, engineer Charles Routier de Romainville, responsible for cartography, and botanist Philibert Commerson, whose mission was to identify new plant species. It was Commerson who discovered the flower in Brazil that would come to be known as "bougainvillea". The expedition also led to the discovery of the Vahitahi and Akiaki atolls. Above all, however, Bougainville's voyage and account contributed to a better geographical understanding of Oceania and to the enrichment of naturalist collections. This edition was published without maps or plates. The first part ends with an "Explanation of marine terms" used in the work, while at the end of the second part is the "Vocabulaire de l'isle Taiti (sic)", followed by M. Pereire's observations. Missing right half of title-piece on spine, corners slightly dulled. Light spotting."
