[Biblia interprete Sebastiano Castalione. Una cum eiusdem Annotationibus. Basel: Johann Oporinus, [March 1554]. -2 parts in one in-folio volume, brown calf, double frame of three gilt fillets, the inner one adorned at the outer corners with a pièce d'arme surrounded by filigree irons, and at the inner corners with a triangular composition of filigree irons, gilt coat of arms inscribed in a diamond-shaped composition of small filigree irons in the center of the boards, ribbed spine adorned in the entrenerfs with the same gilt coat of arms as on the boards, gilt edges (17th century binding). This is the second edition of the Latin Bible by the Protestant humanist and theologian Sébastien Castellion (1515-1563), originally published in 1551. Castellion, who considered the Scriptures to be an imperfect historical work, saw fit to add Flavius Josephus' book of "Judaic Antiquities" to the end of the Old Testament, in order to fill certain gaps in the Bible. Printed by Johann Oporinus in Basel, where Castellion was a professor of Greek, this edition is printed on more than 1,700 columns and includes numerous woodcut historiated initials. A copy in a 17th-century binding, bearing the arms of Sir Richard Brown, first Baronet of Deptford (c. 1605-1682/1683), who was English ambassador to the French court in Paris from 1641 to 1660, and was knighted by Charles II in 1649. This copy later belonged to Adrien-Augustin de Bussy de Lamet (1621-1691), theologian and doctor of the Sorbonne, from one of Picardy's most illustrious families. His handwritten Latin ex-libris appears on the title page, as does his engraved heraldic ex-libris, placed under that of Sir Richard Brown, but which has been covered over. The binding is in poor condition, with split hinges and missing headpieces, corners and edges. The interior, on the other hand, is very well preserved, although there is some light wetness on the edges of a few leaves. Provenance: Sir Richard Brown, with his coat of arms and bookplate. - Adrien-Augustin de Bussy de Lamet, with double handwritten and printed bookplate.
