Paris : Estienne Michallet, 1689. - In-8, brown calf covered with lemon morocco, wide gilt roulette framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, speckled edges (period binding). "First edition, dedicated to the Marquis de Seignelay, of this treatise on fortification attributed to the engineer Jean-François Bernard. Bernard describes his methods in the light of those of his two illustrious predecessors Antoine de Ville (1596-1658) and Blaise-François de Pagan (1604-1665), as well as his contemporary Sébastien Le Prestre marquis de Vauban (1633-1707). Illustrated with 15 plates, including 9 fold-outs. A curious copy bound in calf, but covered in period decorated and glued lemon morocco, decorated on the spine with gilded fleurs-de-lis. This piece, obviously reused, was certainly added to give the work a more luxurious look. The copy also includes the first printing of folio B3, on the front of which Vauban and Pagan are mentioned (last paragraph), which will disappear, along with the rewritten paragraph, in the box found here following the preface. Corners dulled, some worm work, second and third boards damaged. Angular loss to first endpaper and first two leaves, some light spotting and scattered freckling."
