Jean-François Guillet dit VALLIÈRE (Paris, 1743 - Commercy, 1806) - Presumed portrait of Louise Pauline d'Holbach, Marquise de Nolivos (Paris, 1759 - Sauveterre de Béarn, 1830) in gray dress, white shawl and wide braid in her hair, circa 1785. Old identification on verso: "La baronne d'Holbach". Artist's handwritten address on reverse: "[hotel] / de [Flandre] Rue Froidmanteau vis à vis [le] château d'eau / à paris" [his address before 1787]. Oval, 9.8x7.5cm; antique gilded wood frame (to be refixed). - Presumed portrait of one of his children in white gown, queen's collar and wide blue sash, 1788 Old manuscript on reverse: "Dessiné par /Vallière rue du /champ fleurie/ maison de Mr de Bourges architecte du Roy/ a paris mai 1788". Two miniatures drawn with three pencils and heightened with gouache on paper, one oval, sight 9.8x7.5cm, antique gilded wood frame 13x10.3cm; the other diam. sight 7.5cm, antique gilded wood frame 10.3x10.4cm (accidents to frames). Daughter of the famous philosopher and encyclopedist Baron d'Holbach, she married Pierre de Nolivos in 1781, in the presence of the royal family. Pierre de Nolivos, whose lands in Béarn were made a marquisate by King Louis XVI, owned rich plantations in St. Domingue inherited from his uncle Gédéon de Nolivos, former governor of the West Indies (a friend of Thomassin, pictured in the previous issue). The child could be Charlotte Françoise Pauline de Nolivos born in 1782 and married in 1803 to Jean Antoine Louis Pasquier de Franclieu; or her younger sister Jeanne Marie Pauline Cécile de Nolivos (Sauveterre, November 21, 1783 - 1821); their brother Pierre Gédéon Armand Louis de Nolivos born on October 3, 1787, seems too young to be painted in this way in May 1788. Descendants and relatives: Nolivos, Casamajor, Gauldrée de Boileau de Lacaze, Ségure, Pasquier de Franclieu, Bartouilh de Taillac, Coste etc. On Vallière, an important portraitist of the aristocracy under Louis XVI often confused with Carmontelle, see N. Lemoine-Bouchard, La Lettre de la miniature no. 58 (March-April 2021), pp. 3-19.
