Krishna and two women on a terrace, India, late 19th - early 20th century
Gouache and gold on cardboard depicting the haloed god Krishna, kneeling against a cushion on a terrace with two women who appear to be exchanging words. The terrace, bordered by a balustrade, opens onto a river landscape, with hills built of small pavilions in the background. Birds feature prominently in this painting, both in the trees lining the balustrade and in the ground décor, as well as in the two majestic peacock figures enlivening the scene. Frame.
25.4 x 21.3 cm
Minor stains, small tear repaired on one edge.

This painting appears to be an illustration of a Ragamala, the Bhairava Raga, where the god is generally Shiva but several versions are known to include Krishna.
