Dromedary, Iran, 19th century, Safavid style Black ink drawing enhanced with watercolor depicting a dromedary passing to the left, a saddlecloth around its hump, bells attached to its forelegs and a tether attached to its harness. Several floral stems decorate the background. Mounted as an album page on pink cardstock with fragments of illuminated and poetic text pages, then colored paper borders partly powdered with gold. Drawing size: 12 x 13.5 cm; page size: 39 x 27 cm Small tears and folds, light stains. The subject of the dromedary greatly inspired artists of the Safavid period, who themselves served as models for later artists. The attitude and equipment of this camel are very similar to a drawing in the Cleveland Museum of Art (1944.489), attributed to the 16th century, in the style of Shaikh Muhammad.
