Pair of stirrups, probably Syria, 18th-19th century Iron stirrups with convex rectangular base and polylobed attachment ring, the side uprights decorated with inlaid metal wires, one depicting a stylized cypress, the other a rosette, punctuated with silver nails. A line of empty cupules around the cypress suggests the former presence of other inlaid elements. 18 x 16.2 x 13.6 cm Oxidation, scratches, broken inlay. Provenance : Former Roman Ghirshman collection (1895-1979). These stirrups are similar in decoration to a pair in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (36.25.523a, b), attributed to Syria. As suggested for those in the MET, the empty cupules outlining the cypress trees or punctuating the rosettes could have been filled with turquoise.
