Camille PISSARRO (1830-1903).
L.A.S. with drawing, Rouen March 27, 1896, to his son Georges PISSARRO; 2 1/2 pages in-8, stamped envelope.
Beautiful letter illustrated with a pen-and-ink view of Rouen.
Pissarro is in Rouen, at the Hôtel de Paris; he writes to his son Georges [Manzana-Pissarro], who is in England (The Cedars, in Sunbury on Thames).
He is still in Rouen, because of "that devil Depeaux" [collector François Depeaux (1853-1920)] who has delayed sending the promised frames: "I'll leave Rouen on Monday 30th, I'll stay in Paris for 3 or 4 days and I'll go to Eragny to organize my paintings. My paintings do very well in frames, the sketch on the back in one, the T of 30 is square and the motif extends more to the right I should have done the sketch in width. You can still see it, it's gray, the roofs of old houses from the 15th and 16th centuries give you an idea of the backgrounds that illuminators used to put behind their figures... Depeaux doesn't like it very much, I like it quite a bit, precisely because of its sharpness, it's probably the subject that doesn't appeal, if he doesn't take it from me I'd like to keep it for our collection"...
Verso, on a full page (17.7 x 11.5cm), pen and brown ink drawing of the rooftops of old Rouen and the cathedral.
[The painting Les Toits du vieux Rouen is in the Toledo Museum of Art].
