François Nys, of Belgian origin, was the official printer of the Société internationale des aquafortistes founded by F. Rops, and remained its "pressier" until his death in 1898, when Nys retired. Cf. the detailed note by Catherine Méneux, La Magie de l'encre (exposition au Musée Rops), (Anvers), Pandora (2000) p. 162.
On November 10, 1896, Frantz Jourdain wrote to the poet: "Dear Sir, A young relative of mine, Jacques Schnerb, very artistic, very intelligent and a great admirer of your lofty talent, would be happy to give you the etchings intended to illustrate some of your works. Knowing how benevolent you are to youth, I therefore address my engraver to you, thanking you in advance for the advice you will kindly give him"... (Austin VIII p. 269).
"Jacques Schnerb (1879-1915), painter and engraver, art critic, born in Avignon, died on the front", notes Austin. He points out the copy of this "extremely rare album" in the Moran collection at St John's College Library, Cambridge. It was in the collection of the Australian poet Christopher J. Brennan that this no. 14, acquired on June 17, 1897, was found by John Foulkes and published in French Studies in 1978. A Mallarmé enthusiast since his studies in Berlin, Brennan collected his rare editions, receiving a list of those published by Geneviève (Austin VI, p. 204-205). In 1897, he produced an astonishing pastiche of Le Coup de dés based on the Cosmopolis he had just received in Sydney in May (idem. IX p. 271). The two engraver friends published L'atelier de Cézanne, which they had visited, in La Grande Revue, 12/25/1907, and Schnerb exhibited from 1908 onwards at the Salon d'Automne and the Indépendants.
No. 9 belongs to the Mondor-Mallarmé collection (Bibliothèque littéraire J. Doucet). It was exhibited in 1972 at the French Symbolist Painters. Curators Al. Bowness, G. Lacambre and Ph. Jullian. London, Liverpool, Madrid, Barcelona, no. 298 (reprod. Hérodiade).
Provenance: Gustave-André Dassonville, who sold it in December 1959 to Claude Roulet (1916-2010). - Claude Roulet, universitaire, mallarméen, Artcurial, 14/11/2011 n° 130.6
