*Stéphane MALLARMÉ.
1) René GHIL. Traité du verbe with Foreword by Stéphane Mallarmé. Nouvelle édition augmentée et avérée. Paris, Alcan Lévy, (May) 1887, in-12 carré br.
Colophon: "Aux dépens de la Direction des Écrits pour L'Art en la personne de: Gaston Dubedat au mois de mai 1887".
The original edition was published in September 1886 by Giraud in small numbers. This 2nd edition, published by Les Écrits pour l'Art, is unwarranted. This ex. is on a strong Gerhard-tinted laid paper, used at the time for drawing. It is undoubtedly a large paper. The preface disappeared in the 3rd edition published by Deman in 1888, perhaps because Mallarmé intended to reprint a corrected part of it in Le Tiroir de Laque, the future Pages.
Ex. to be reconditioned. Henry Charpentier has covered it with a simple grayish paper which he has titled on the spine; the 1st board, cut rather short, is the only one preserved detached, but the copy has full margins, and despite a deep tear on p. 44, it has all the appearance of a large paper, surely uncommon. Provenance: Henry Charpentier, Mallarmé-Morel no. 45 (in part).
2) F.-A. CAZALS. Iconography of some of the poets present. Album n° I: Laurent Tailhade/With a preface by Stéphane Mallarmé. Paris, Bibliothèque de La Plume,1894, plaq. pet. in-4 debr.
E.O. limited to 145 copies. One of 100 copies on Chine, no. 59 in red ink. First edition of L. Tailhade's portraits and charges by Cazals. Fine etching frontispiece portrait by MD, the excellent engraver Marcellin Desboutin, after Cazals, printed in bistre on Chine. In margin, silhouette of Mallarmé in term by Cazals (reprod. Portraits de M. p. 66).
Preface by Mallarmé published in La Plume, Oct. 1, 1894, echoing the attack on the Foyot restaurant in which the pamphleteer lost an eye (Marchal OC. II p. 1618). Under the title "Frontispice", it will be included in Divagations, 1897. 1st plate badly damaged and restored. The rarest of the albums.
3) Léopold DAUPHIN. Raisins bleus & gris. Poésies. Paris, Vanier, [April] 1897, pet. in-12 br. Green brown chagr. spine folder with gold titling, marbled paper, lined with suede, slipcase [for 3 and 5] (Devauchelle).
E.O. One of 8 head copies on Japon, no. 4. Autograph letter on 2nd bl. in ink: "à Mr Brissaud/Cher docteur, je vous dois le sourire encore de ma fille [il en avait trois] et avec lui - conséquence - la réalisation de ce petit livre. I cannot tell you better what gratitude mine can be: believe it long lasting and vivacious./ Cordially yours/ Léopold Dauphin/ Easter Day 97."
He corrected, at Mallarmé's request on April 17 (Marchal Corr. 2932), the emphasis to be placed on the devine typo (he did it in ink, M. speaks of pencil).
Mallarmé's "Avant-dire" (Marchal OC. II p. 680).
A sonnet dedicated to Mallarmé: "Ce marbre élevé que, hautain, / Tu voiles de nuit à longs plis, / Nous garde en rythmes assouplis / Beauté sereine et fier dédain"... Appreciated by the dedicatee: "Le Sonnet, d'une grave ferveur, me prend comme un cri seul et ample" (Marchal Corr. 2711).
Charming little collection, the first by composer Léopold Dauphin (Béziers, 1848 -1925), a contributor to Le Chat noir where he "churned out hundreds of poems, all short, light, carefree and signed with the dapper pseudonym of Pimpinelli [..], a companion in reverie and poetic conversations, a delightful and faithful friend", as the erudite P. Saunier tells us in his Bazar à Treize (March 2014 no. 332). His daughters Madeleine (who married Franc-Nohain) and Jane Dauphin have delicately adorned the cover with a Pre-Raphaelite composition in blue (cf. infra) and, in the text, with flowery vignettes in black (cf. color reproduction of the current Fischer coll. ex., Galantaris 2014 p. 520) "Ce bon Dauphin ne s'embarrasse/Deux [de ses filles] peignent"...(Marchal OC. I, Vers de circonstance p. 286).
Covers faded, spine restored, else fine and rare ex. on Japon in gr. partly uncut.
4) Léopold DAUPHIN. Couleur du temps. Poésies. P., Vanier, [March] 1899; pet. in-12 br.
E.O. One of 8 first editions on Japon, no. 2.
Aut. s. on a mourning card: "Voici, bien chère amie, mon second volume. I didn't want to write the dedication opposite, since I don't think I remember writing any dedication on the first. Yours sincerely always L.D./T.S.V.P.
to Geneviève Mallarmé
Today, so bitter still our pain
Sees the dew here of mortuary flowers
Irritated and trembling as our tears flow,
Tending a dear memory softens what misfortune!
March 99 Léopold Dauphin".
Collection dedicated to the memory of his beloved Mallarmé: "Fervemment/Tendrement/Avec gratitude et quelle tristesse/ Je dédie/ Ces/ Vers couleur du temps/ Qui lui plurent parce qu'il m'aimait".
