Stéphane MALLARMÉ. Autograph poem, [July 20, 1896]; 1page oblong in-16 (6.5 x 10.5cm) on fine wove paper. Unknown original draft of this quatrain. The definitive version of this quatrain was sent to Mme Marguerite Ponsot for her birthday, July 20, 1896 [Correspondance (Marchal), no. 2690; Œuvres complètes (Pléiade), t.I, p.308, no. 10; ancienne collection Rodocanachi; Jean-Baptiste de Proyart, catal. 14, Stéphane Mallarmé, Lettres & Quatrains, [2023], no. 121]. This first draft was published, according to a copy by Geneviève Mallarmé, in the original edition of Vers de circonstance (N.R.F., 1920, p.106, XI), and reprinted in variant form in Œuvres complètes (Pléiade Marchal), t.I, p.1286 (10). The present, hitherto unknown draft, written with a fine pen in black ink, bears the name "Mme Ponsot" and the indication "pour la fête, l'été" at the top. It has two small erasures (here in square brackets), with a bracket marking the indentation of the last word of the 3rd verse, spelled "gentilment": "Mme Ponsot pour la fête, l'été Just like our feeling The same flower [..] never faded Madame Ponsot, Kindly Rebaît[ra] pour vous avec l'année".
