Stéphane MALLARMÉ. L.A.S. "Stéphane Mallarmé" and autograph poem signed "SM", [Paris December 26, 1895], to Méry Laurent; 1page in-8 on laid paper; and 1page in-18 on his business card with address 89 rue de Rome. Beautiful declaration of love to Méry Laurent, with a quatrain. "Thursday evening I love you. You hear well, my darling; let me write only this, it's good, do you hear, heart. Here, I think, on the enclosed little card is a compliment easy to read, understand (even for you) and learn. I'd like to recite it to you, if you could see what a pretty bow I'd make to you too. Until this evening Your Stéphane Mallarmé" The letter is accompanied by this quatrain on Mallarmé's visiting card [it was recopied in Méry Laurent's album with the indication of the gift of a glass of water, and published in Vers de circonstance in 1920 (p.84, iv)]. "Your lip against the crystal Gorgée à gorgée y compose The purple and vital memory Of the less ephemeral rose" Correspondence (Marchal), n° 2523.
