DORNAC, pseudonym of Paul Cardon also known as Pol Marsan.
Photograph of Mallarmé, [April 1893]:17.9 x 12.8cm.
Mallarmé standing in his dining room next to the stove where he usually stood during Mardis at 89 rue de Rome, his portrait by Manet (Musée d'Orsay) hanging behind him.
Superb unmounted print on citrate paper. From the famous Nos contemporains chez eux series. Dry stamp "Dornac 34 R. Gassendi Rep. Interd.".
One of three shots (see next no.) by Dornac on [April 17], 1893, based on the letter in which Mallarmé gave him an appointment (Marchal Corr. 1938 lists only the photo with the aut. quatrain). There is a vertical print with Mallarmé standing (Ch. Mauron Mallarmé. P., Seuil, Écrivains de toujours, [1979] p. 122).
Provenance: Dornac archives, Piasa, Drouot 16/5/2008 no. 114. The photos are dated April 22, 1893 (appointment postponed?), based solely on late Dornac lists from 1916-17 (see the excellent introductions to the cat.).
Attached is a small silver print (10.2 x 13.5) of another photo of the poet standing by the stove, round "Tuesday" table in front of him and two other Manets on the wall; it is neither by Dornac (cat. Mallarmé expo d'Orsay, 1998 no. 57 p. 101), nor anonymous (Nectoux p. 203), but by the photographer Henri Mairet [see 80] - Mallarmé-Morel no. 179.
