*Stéphane MALLARMÉ. Vers et Prose. Morceaux choisis /With a portrait by James M. N. Whistler. Paris, Perrin et Cie, 1893 [shortly before November 16, 1892]; in-12 gray half-maroq edged with gilt fillet, smooth spine, gilt t., untrimmed, covers and spine cons. (Tchékéroul) First edition of this selection, partly original. Copy of the current edition on glazed vellum "at 1250/1000 copies [sic, for the 2nd edition?] plus 25 Hollande copies and 10 Japon copies" according to the detailed register of the Perrin bookshop consulted by C.P. Barbier (Correspondance Mallarmé-Whistler. P., Nizet, 1964 p. 190-91). Frontispiece by Whistler, the famous portrait (see next no.) printed in black on Chine appliqué on heavyweight vellum, appropriately stamped with the round dry cancel: "Imprimé Par Belfond & Cie/Paris". It was to be printed by Lemercier: "If the Lemercier had been able to transfer the drawing [on stone] as Belfond had managed to do for me before - there would have been no question of the succes - It caught up - but it taught us what to do", the artist wrote to the poet on November 2, 1892 (ibid. p. 184). The print run probably took place on November 7 on Chine appliqué, as Whistler had wished (Austin V p. 143). N.B. The deluxe copies have two proofs: the 10 Japon on Chine appliqué and on Japon; the 25 Hollande on Chine appliqué and on vergé (grey tint). See next n° for loose proofs. Spine slightly darkened, otherwise in perfect condition; the handsome blue glazed cover, printed by Capiomont at 1,450 copies on Oct. 26 (register op.cit. p.191), is as new; in an elegant half-binding by the master Tchékéroul. Also included: Vers et Prose. Morceaux choisis. Frontispiece after Paul Gauguin [the engraved portrait printed in sepia] and a portrait by James Mc Neill Whistler. (Paris), L'Intelligence, 1926 (January 10, 1927); in-8 br. Numbered copy on Rives vellum. Elegant, well-established edition by Georges-Célestin Crès, director of the firm "Les Arts et le Livre". Perhaps he is the author of the note to Mallarmé's Avant-dire, offering him "a frame worthy of the text (more sought-after paper and printing). The only luxury he would have liked for his anthology [...]. The modesty he claims for his descendants is all the more deserving, given that the choice and arrangement of the verses, on the one hand, and the addition of several original paragraphs joining the prose texts, on the other, make this book an original work in itself". Enriched edition with a facsimile of the 1st page of Ulalume, which we believe has not been catalogued. It corresponds to the state published by Deman in Les Poèmes de Poe of 1888, as it excludes the two punctuation variants added in the Vanier edition of 1889.
