*Stéphane MALLARMÉ.
Chansons Bas I (le Savetier)/ II (la Marchande d'Herbes Aromatiques). La Revue blanche, 15 mai 1892, n° 8 nouvelle série t. II, elegantly imposed opposite (pp. 288-89); in-8 br. Bordeaux chagr. spine folder with gold titling, lined with suede, slipcase (Atelier Devauchelle).
Copy of the "restricted" deluxe edition [30?] on Hollande laid paper, the only large paper. From 20 Hollande in 1890, the magazine went to 30 when it was still justified.
A single imprint on the cover: "De l'Edition de luxe, /Exemplaire N°... / Tiré spécialement pour M......" in small type in the lower left corner of the 1st cover. Copies could be numbered in ink (we know of some) with the subscriber's name.
La Revue blanche, founded in Liège in 1889 by the Natanson brothers, had moved to Paris at 19 rue des Martyrs. In 1892, it was published on the 15th of the month.
On May 2 1892, Lucien Muhlfeld, the editorial secretary, asked the poet: "The May issue will appear exactly on the 15th of this month [in April, it was 15 days late!] I'd like it to be very beautiful. Dare I beg you to help me make it so?"... Failing to entrust him with another sonnet, the two Chansons Bas were chosen: "Do you have the (modified) Sonnet from the Album Raffaeli [sic]? - Would you be good enough to edify me on that today?"... (Austin V p. 75 and 81). Mallarmé asked him to drop by that same evening, Thursday 5 or 12 (Austin and Marchal's date of May 19 seems too late for an outing on the 15th! ).
The two sonnets appeared, along with 5 quatrains, in Les Types de Paris illustrés par Jean-François Raffaëlli. P., Édition du Figaro. Plon, Nourrit et Cie, (1889), issue no. 7. They are reprinted under other, modified titles, as Muhlfeld points out, because the magazine only publishes "absolutely unpublished works".
First rewritten edition of the scatological quatrain from "La petite Marchande de Lavandes" in Types de Paris: "l'hypocrite s'il // En décore la faïence / Où chacun jamais complet / Tapi dans sa défaillance / Au bleu sentiment se plaît" becoming "En tapisse la muraille/ De lieux les absolus lieux [d'aisance] / Pour le ventre qui se raille / Renaître aux sentiments bleus." (see proof no. 70).
Note that the articles in the titles should have been printed in lower case, as clearly requested by the poet on the proof, but Deman incorrectly printed them in upper case (corrected from the mock-up in Marchal OC. I p. 33 and 1181).
Fine scattered spotting, otherwise in fine condition, uncut. Very rare.
