Stéphane MALLARMÉ.
Corrected proof with autograph poem, Chansons bas, [1892]; folio (28 x 14cm) on buff paper (traces of cracks and small tears with marginal tears, folio lined with strong paper).
Unknown proof for Chansons bas, with autograph manuscript of a poem.
Proof for publication in La Revue blanche of May 15, 1892 (pp. 288-289) [see no. 71 below] of the Chansons bas (the title appears here), giving the text of the two sonnets to be retained for the Poésies (out of the 7 poems published in 1889 in Les Types de Paris).
In the margin, Mallarmé has indicated: "Sur deux pages et blanchir, un peu, aux titres".
I Le Savetier: Mallarmé has made a typographical correction to the title, replacing the period with an exclamation mark.
II La petite Marchande d'Herbes Aromatiques. Mallarmé has crossed out the adjective "petite" in the title, and made numerous autograph corrections to the text of the poem, in particular to the quatrain sur les lieux d'aisance, of which the proof gives an unpublished version:
"En décore la muraille
Of places, convenient places
For a belly that mocks it
Reborn to blue feelings"
Mallarmé then recopies the 14 lines of the poem in its definitive version at the top of the page, except for the first name of the 12th line, changed here to "Joséphine" and reinstated in the edition as "Zéphirine".
"Your azure straw of lavender,
Don't think with that eyelash
Dared you to sell it to me
As to the hypocrite if he

En tapisse la muraille"...
Œuvres complètes (Marchal, Pléiade), t.I, p. 33-34.
