*Stéphane MALLARMÉ. Pages / Avec un frontispice à l'eau[-]forte par Renoir. À Bruxelles, chez l'Éditeur Edmond Deman, [5 mai] 1891; pet. in-4 br. Black half-maroq flap folder with gilt fillet corners, gilt fleurons on spine, gray moiré silk lining to match gray cover, slipcase (Alain Devauchelle). Partly original edition [see 65] with Renoir's frontispiece, etching printed on fairly strong Van Gelder Zonen laid paper (vertical pontuseaux, cf. supra). One of [74] ex. HC (see details 65) on Hollande light laid paper bearing printed below the justif.: "Exemplaire offert à", completed by the autograph dispatch signed in ink: "Anatole France Autrefois, maintenant Stéphane Mallarmé". Autrefois: l'Improvisation d'un Faune (1875 title, Ms Fonds Bodmer, for the future: L'Après-midi d'un Favne) was excluded from the anthology of the 3rd Contemporary Parnassus, mainly by Anatole France, but also by François Coppée, Banville having accepted it. Valéry avenged Mallarmé when he was admitted to the Académie in Anatole France's chair. Now it's Mallarmé's own anthology under his diktat! Anatole France only half-opened the anthology on the first prose poem, Le Phénomène futur, and part of Le Nénufar blanc, the rest having fallen out of his hands uncut, without damaging the precious large volume with its beautiful typography delicately covered with a glossy grey paper that must have seduced the bibliophile... Fine spotting on some pages, spine naturally a little weakened given the heavy volume, otherwise fine cover. Provenance: Hubert Heilbronn Literary Library. Sotheby's, 11/5/2021 no. 138 [with a supposedly invented number 325] (bookplate). Also included: - Henri MONDOR - L'Affaire du Parnasse. Stéphane Mallarmé and Anatole France. Paris, Éditions Fragrance, (1951), in-12 br. E.O. Numbered copy on Montval laid paper. New and uncut. - Paul VALÉRY - Lettre sur Mallarmé. [Paris] Pour les Amis de Lucien Kra, [1927], in-8 square br. Letter to Jean Royère for the preface to his book on Mallarmé, published by Kra on 2/6/1927. Offprint (without change of pagination) at 15 ex. num. hc. One of 11 on vélin d'arches, no. 13 (Karaïskakis-Chapon, 92A). [In mint condition.
