Stéphane MALLARMÉ.
L.A.S. "Stéphane Mallarmé", Valvins July 27, 1891, to Edmond DEMAN; 4pages in-8 (small traces of tabs).
About the preparation of the volume of Vers ou Poésies, which was being prepared by the Belgian publisher Edmond DEMAN (1857-1918). This project, conceived as early as 1888, was not realized until 1899, after Mallarmé's death.
Mallarmé first thanked Deman for sending a copy [of Pages, see no. 66] "sent to my young friend Robert Picard [son of Belgian writer and collector Edmond Picard (1836-1924)], I know it gave great pleasure. Your trip... July is drawing to a close, and I expect you every day. I've been looking forward to talking to you about Vers for two months, and to establishing it: it's certainly better a thousand times over in person; but if you're not coming, let's start with letters. I'm afraid my vacation will end without any work being done, after which I'll be short of freedom.
I'm going to do a current definitive edition of Vathek [see no. 38] with the Librairie Académique Perrin, but I'm not being unfaithful to you, am I? This house wanted to have my name and I found this joint. My personal set is yours. (But let's get on with it). I still have real articles on Pages.
Finally, a journalist, Maurice Guillemot, to whom Huysmans spoke about you, asked me to propose a book entitled Sadisme, with a frontispiece by Rops: I was about to reply, on my own initiative, that you were now only exceptionally publishing; is that what I have to say? Your hand, that I pull you this way; Fontainebleau is green!"...
Correspondence (Austin), t.XI, p.66-67. - Correspondence (Marchal), no. 972.
