*Stéphane MALLARMÉ.
Pages / Avec un frontispice à l'eau[-]forte par Renoir. À Bruxelles, chez l'Éditeur Edmond Deman, [5 mai*] 1891; pet. in-4 full red percaline, smooth spine titled in gold, tr. jaspées rouge (Contemporary boards).
Partly original edition of this anthology, all but two of whose texts had appeared in reviews: Morceau pour [me] résumer Vathek (the pronoun added to the Table) in the 1876 preface to Vathek [see 37] and Divagation, extracted from the "Avant-dire" of René Ghil's Traité du verbe [see 87/1].
* "le livre est en vente à Paris - chez presque tous les Libraires, depuis le 5, -vitriné - affiché" Deman to Mallarmé (Austin XI p. 134).
On announcements of a first title Le Tiroir de Laque in 1888, cf. 53/1.
Frontispiece by Renoir, etching printed on fairly strong Van Gelder Zonen laid paper (vertical pontuseaux, cf. next). Based on the Venus drawings of 1887; completed before 1890 and inspired by Le Phénomène du futur (Publications de la Librairie Deman, p. 59).
One of [190] ex. on Hollande light laid paper, press no. 193 (numbering beginning with Japon).
Bibliographical data:
Edition, according to the print, 325 num. ex. (50 Japon, 275 Hollande) + 50 HC non justified, "tant pour vous que pour presse, sans N°s" that he had planned. Deman admits that his printer was mistaken in printing only 50 J., 225 H. and 39 HC, i.e. 314 copies. Mallarmé being anxious to have more copies to distribute, Deman agrees to an edition of "35 new unnumbered faux-titres and, sacrificing 35 ex. for sale, I will make 35 ex. for press, to which I will add enough to make up the sixty or so".
The final print run was [314] copies: 50 Japon and 190 Hollande numbered for the press and 74 Hollande HC not numbered (39 already initially printed), of which at least 7 remained with Deman.
If Mallarmé liked to say that Deman was a no-brainer, this is not the case for bibliographers. The skein was untangled thanks to the extraordinary carbon copies of Deman's letters to Mallarmé sent by Luc and Adrienne Fontainas to Austin, who published them in 1985 (Corr. XI p. 134-35; summary in Publications, p. 58). Needless to say, the cataloguers stick to the printed version!
Faint spotting, foxing on endpapers, otherwise an astonishing copy in strictly period percaline (corners slightly worn), without cover, which one would believe to be in publisher's cartonnage if it could be proved.
