*Stéphane MALLARMÉ. Sonnet. Pre-original in 1ère belle page in La Wallonie, January 31, 1889; in-12 br. booklet. Bordeaux red chagr. spine folder, gold titled spine, suede lining, slipcase (Atelier Devauchelle [2009]). A very small number of copies printed on large Hollande laid paper. La Wallonie, printed in Liège by Vaillant-Carmanne, was a leading Symbolist journal, edited by fervent Mallarméans including Albert Mockel, Maurice Siville [see 57-58], Pierre-M. Olin. "Its pure nails very high dedicating their onyx [...] Aboli bibelot d'inanité sonore"... Famous Sonnet in its 2nd version, which is the only one published during his lifetime, the first with its subtitle "allegorical of himself" having remained in manuscript; but much studied since then (Pléiade OC I p. 37 and 131). These pre-publications in magazines were all the more important as the poet's editions were confidential. In fact, this poem had only appeared in Les Poésies photolithographiées, with 40 copies on sale, and at what a price! Hence the copies that circulated, as in the good old days of censorship... With another Mallarméan rarity: Les Flaireurs. This issue, in large paper, contains the pre-original version of Charles Van Lerberghe's Symbolist play Les Flaireurs, of which an offprint of 25 copies (!) was made, a bibliophilic treasure if ever there was one. It was so discreet that poor Van Lerberghe was accused of plagiarizing L'Intruse by his friend Maeterlinck, who categorically denied it in La Revue Indépendante, which had launched this perfidy, but Maeterlinck was on a roll... (We refer to our long notice in the Bibliothèque littéraire d'un amateur [Louis de Sadeleer], Simonson, 28/5/1988 n° 77, which covers the whole dossier). Largely uncut, extremely rare, as issued.
