*Stéphane MALLARMÉ.
Album de Vers & de Prose. Bruxelles, Librairie nouvelle. Paris, Librairie universelle, [early December] 1887; 16 pp. booklet, stapled pet. in-12, yellow cover printed in black and red [Belgian flag!]. Brown titled chagr. spine folder, cat's-eye paper, suede lining, slipcase (Atelier Devauchelle).
[On cover, as title page: "1re série, n° 10/Poètes & Prosateurs/ Anthologie contemporaine/des/Écrivains Français & Belges/ (...) 15 centimes".
Partly original edition for the 4 prose poems, preceded by 9 of the most famous poems finally available in a current edition, whereas the photolithographed Poésies had only appeared two months earlier in 40 copies at the price of 100fr. Enthusiasts were waiting to be able to read it in a collective edition outside unobtainable magazines.
First printing at 16 pp. with the name of Gilon in Verviers in the bottom margin (the 2nd is printed at 12 pp. by X. Havermans in Brussels and introduces a typo in the 1st letter of Sonnet IV (cf. the excellent survey in the Pléiade by Mondor and Jean-Aubry. OC (1974) p. 1333).
On the 2nd plate, the announced publications have been corrected in ink to December 10 (instead of December 1), due to the delay of Mallarmé. Hence the proposed start of the month.
The Bibliographie at the head had been shortened, and of course without mention of Vanier, since the Faune affair two months earlier.
Freckles due to the poor quality of wood paper for cheap series. Verhaeren informed him of this on August 27: "an honest little publication to which everyone gives and for which, this very day, I am asked for my verses. I'll give some, even though we're in mixed company. Decide what you see fit [we correct the good and the punctuation according to the author]. To collaborate will be neither a hanging case nor an immense honor." (Austin Corr. III p. 128).
