*Edouard DUJARDIN.
To the glory of Antonia. With an ex libris drawn by Félicien Rops. Paris, Librairie de La Revue Indépendante, (Dec. 24) 1887; gr. in-8 plate br.
Original edition limited to 55 copies, 5 of which are first editions. One of 50 on French vellum, numbered 20 in ink by the publisher-author.
Cover on Japon-feutre from the "Manufacture de Tokio" [cf. no. 46], same house with the only small magazine mark stamped with the publisher's initials ED in bluish gray in the upper corner; title and autogr. signature in ink by the same publisher.
Autograph signed letter on same front cover/false-title:
"à Stéphane Mallarmé/d'une amicale dévotion / Edouard Dujardin".
Issued early January 88: in a "vient de paraître" on the 4th cover of La Revue Indépendante, no. 15, January 1888, a fasc. that was delayed beyond no. 12 (a text on the 3rd cover on this date).
Frontispiece "Ex Libris" by Félicien ROPS; printed title, monogr. FR. Photogravure probably by Paul Dujardin (1 f. after f.-t./justif. part of the quires).
[Rouir (III, p. 519 top right), who is unaware of this edition, reproduces an etching which he rightly calls a "crude copy", not of the frontispiece of La Grande Lyre as he suggests from the cat.'s layout, but of the photogravure of Antonia (or its drawing), a copy different in every detail. The proof he lists is the one on MBM d'Arches cream laid paper from the interwar period, from the Pereire/Odry/De Poortere collection, which went to the Musée Rops with this collection (PER E0424.1.CF) (cf. 48/1)].
The pen-and-ink drawing predates December 24, 1887. The project dates back to September, cf. a 1st full-page advertisement of the platelet with his name in a supplement (double f.n.pag.) to no. 12 of [1] Oct. of La Revue Indépendante; i.e., at the time when Rops was completing the frontispiece to the Grande Lyre des Poésies, recorded on the cover of the same issue.
Provenance: Mallarmé-Morel, no. 30.
