Stéphane MALLARMÉ.
2 L.A.S. "Stéphane Mallarmé", [May-August 1887], to Édouard DUJARDIN; 1page large in-8 (20.2 x 13.5cm) on laid paper; 1 page and a half in-fol (31 x 20cm) on wove paper (slight cracks at folds skillfully restored, under plexiglass); dates headed in ink by Dujardin.
Preparation of the photolithographed edition of Poésies for La Revue indépendante.
[Édouard Dujardin (1861-1949), director of La Revue indépendante, published the first photolithographed edition of Mallarmé's Poésies in 1887 (see 46)].
- Tuesday 1 a.m. [May 24, 1887]. Mallarmé sends his dear friend the proof of an article [Notes sur le théâtre]: "three-quarters of the corrections are misprints; and the other quarter, to perfect the least bad of the studies I published with you. I'll check, won't I? on a good sheet of paper, which I'll keep for only five minutes: I'm absolutely counting on it."
Then, speaking of the first volume of Poésies, which has just been published: "Apart from a few letters that didn't make it onto the autograph proofs, and the ink that still needs to be blackened, I think the effect produced by the reduction is delightful: it's an admirable idea that has come to you in a roundabout way. The text is both manuscript and printed!
- Valvins, Wednesday [August 10, 1887]. On the progress of the copy of the manuscript for the edition.
"My dear Dujardin,
I didn't answer you until I could see my way clear. Friday evening the roll will be sent to your address; it would take complete disarray for it not to be until Saturday. I've copied everything, but a little too quickly, and however much you're in a hurry, I don't want to deliver a job that's too inferior to what it would have been with more time: I foresee a few unwelcome pages to be rewritten and a dozen verses to be corrected. We'll need two more pages in the first fascicule, eighteen instead of sixteen, or we'll have to delete a poem - I've turned the difficulty on its head, but it's impossible! This is nothing compared to an absolute hitch: I don't have Herodias here to copy, and I inadvertently left it in a particular place! Quickly and by return mail, tell me if you're coming to Paris to deliver the manuscript to the lithographers, then I'll tell you where to pick up the missing sheets from me; and by post sending them and receiving them copied would only be a matter of forty-eight hours. We'll probably print twice.
Au revoir, I say not a word to you apart from all this, writing since six o'clock in the morning, it is noon; and I place in yours my hand."
Provenance: Auguste Lambiotte collection (sale April 22, 1977, no. 62).
Correspondence (Austin), t.III, p.115-116 (for the 1st). - Correspondence (Marchal), nos. 814 and 830.
