*Stéphane MALLARMÉ. L'Après-midi d'un Faune. Original etchings by Pierre-Yves Trémois. Commentary by Léon-Paul Fargue. Paris, Société des Amis des Livres, (May 10) 1948; gr. in-4 bound in Bradel full parchment decorated with a drawing on each plate, gold-titled spine, green moiré silk lining and endpapers, half-vellum flap folder, green paper, gold-titled spine, lined green paper case (Adrien Lavaux [fils]). Edition edited by Pierre Guerquin and André Beraldi and printed by Pierre Bouchet in black and green. Unique edition of 105 copies on Arches pur fil du Marais vellum (filigree of the small seated faun surrounded by the letters A - S - D and L). One of 88 ex. de Sociétaires, n° 42 nominatif, illustrated with 23 etchings and burins by Pierre-Yves Trémois, including one double pl. The cover is illustrated with a woodcut by Pierre Bouchet after Trémois' drawing. Two Society menus in the same format on identical vellum printed in 56 copies: - March 20, 1948 at the Cercle Interallié, double f. with an etching of a young couple embracing, justif. 25/56 in another hand and signed by Trémois. - November 25, 1948 at the Automobile Club with the refused plate signed by Trémois bearing the engraved title L'après midi d'un faune, justif. 31/56 and annotated by another hand: "Faux-titre non retenu". The copperplate, which is complete, will be reduced in size later, as will the other plates. "Suite des gravures sur vélin" [18 copies], imprint on 1f., signed and justif. 11/18 by Trémois, i.e. 25 plates including the Fauna on the cover, printed in green, woodcut signed by Trémois and P. Bouchet sc[ulpsit]; the f.-t. refused (cf. other proof above) and the 23 etchings. The 23 plates, whose reduced copperplates have been reworked, with the addition of important remarks, are often signed, dated 1947 and sometimes titled in the copperplate. For example, in the last engraving at the end of Fargue's text, appears the large, unknown portrait of Mallarmé added to the edition's sleeping faun. Ex. singularly enriched with 2 menus (Monod 7670 reports one) and their plates, and the rare suite of 18 ex. Magnificent large brush, pen and India ink drawings by Trémois (with scratchings) covering both parchment covers, of which bookbinder Adrien Lavaux fils was a sought-after specialist among post-war French bibliophiles.
