Eugène BOUDIN. L.A.S., Deauville October 25, 1891, to Ferdinand MARTIN; 4pages in-8. About his work in Étretat. Passing through Le Havre, he had "just enough time to catch a good cold in the kidneys, which gave me a very serious rheumatism of the heart from which I am barely relieved at the moment. We stayed four days in Étretat. It was lovely to see the sea licking the cliffs, but it was bitterly cold. As I didn't want to come back empty-handed from my excursion, I wanted to paint, and I didn't like it". He was unable to say hello to the Martins: "I was in a hurry to get home and get better. [...] Decidedly, it's too much exposure at our age to want to fight the cold and the rain. One should be content to do one's job on warm days. [...] This year, I will have given my poor old carcass a hard time". He thought of retiring as a tradesman: "But then we'd have to tie our hands behind our backs... and then maybe we'd paint with our mouths"... He dreaded his return to Paris: "They're going to fall on my back... we'll have to start burning... burning in the fumes from the stove... Finally, my dear friend, it must be done or... finish the store. But if the brain is still good, it's no longer the same for the body, which is wearing out"...
