Eugène BOUDIN.
L.A.S., Etaples July 8, 1890, to Ferdinand MARTIN; 3pages in-8 (small mourning; slight foxing).
About his work in Etaples.
He is still traveling. "And what a trip! Never have I found the weather more disappointing... the wind, the rain, the cold... what a summer month. Twenty times I was on the verge of returning to Paris. And then you see a little smile from the sky: you start hoping for better weather and it never comes... What's clearer than all that is that you're racked with pain, and for the last eight days I've been dragging myself around with rheumatism in my back and heart, barely able to work in the intermittent rain.
I assure you, it's no fun working in these conditions; if it hadn't been for stubbornness and a natural desire to do a bit of work, I'd have given up everything... But what, in Deauville wouldn't I have found the same weather? Yesterday, at last, the sun came out again with the heat; the only day of fine weather we've had for a month... Today it's set to continue, and I'm going to take advantage of it to do a few sketches in a hurry, as I'm desperate to get some rest in my little hut and warm my bones.
And I, who left with the desire to do better than every year in order to avoid the long and tiring winter's work, will only bring back pochades... and then only pochades".
He sent to the Le Havre exhibition "three paintings from the Salon - the others have been bought"...
He was thinking of going to Dunkirk, "but the wife of our friend Braquaval has fallen seriously ill and I won't be redoing the house that seduced you at the Exhibition and that I sold... I've been asked for it nine times"...
