Hector BERLIOZ (1803-1869). L.A.S., Saturday morning [May 24, 1856, to Théodore RITTER and Toussaint BENNET]; 3pages in-12 (small mourning). Amusing unpublished letter, written the day after the letter of May 23 [Correspondance, t.V, no. 2130]. "Now that you've had a good laugh at me (both of you) about my past participles, I want you to know that I know very well not to say you heard it (referring to an overture) but you heard it. My head was so upside down I was beating the countryside. And all because I thought I'd made a gross error in my poem [the libretto of Les Troyens]; an error which (all information taken) didn't exist. Now I'm reasonable again". Then he talks about the concert given on May 23rd at the Théâtre Italien by horn player Eugène Vivier: "Vivier's concert took place with seven or eight thousand francs in takings; Melle Cruvelli didn't sing, Gueymar didn't sing. The public became very angry when these two failures were announced, and Vivier was able to say, like Boileau's man: We have neither Lambert nor Molière But since I have you, I'm too happy"... Attached is an autograph bill signed to Théodore Ritter, [ca. August 25, 1857] (1p. in-12, address): "Mon cher Théodore Venez donc un moment avec votre partition de Roméo. I have discovered a bun in the arrangement of the Scherzo"... (Correspondance générale, t.VIII, p.455).
