*Léon BAKST (1866-1924).
Original drawing, signed and dated lower left "BAKST 1910"; graphite and watercolor, with gold highlights, on laid paper (35.5 x 21.3cm on view, framed).
Costume model for the Ballets Russes.
The last digit of the date, difficult to read due to the stretch marks on the paper, appears to be 1910.
This beautifully finished costume model could therefore be linked to the ballet Schéhérazade, probably for one of the three Odalisques.
The woman, slightly seated and facing left, is dressed in a light, highly transparent veil, revealing her body and breasts. She is adorned with rich jewels and holds a statuette at the end of her raised left arm.
With music by Rimsky-Korsakov, choreography by Michel Fokine, sets and costumes by Léon Bakst, Scheherazade premiered on June 4, 1910 at the Paris Opéra, with Ida Rubinstein and Nijinsky in the principal roles.
Provenance: former Richard MACNUTT collection.
