Endre ROZSDA [Franco-Hungarian] (1913-1999) Woman with rooster, circa 1955 Graphite and colored pencil on paper. Signed lower right. 20.5 x 31 cm This work is registered in the inventory of Rozsda's work under number ER-AG-5751. We would like to thank Patrice Conti, Chantal Hourcade and José Mangani, co-presidents of the Association des Amis d'Endre Rozsda, for the information they provided. It's a drawing made with colored pencils and 2H lead, allowing complex details to be worked in. The same technique was used by Rozsda in the work entitled "Aurore", currently in the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. "Woman with a Rooster" is registered in Rozsda's inventory of works under number ER-AG-5751. In 1955, trapped in Budapest and prevented from painting by Stalinism, Rozsda drew intensely at night to pursue the development of a body of work incorporating surrealist automatism. It was only after the crushing of the Hungarian revolution, in early 1957, that he was able to settle again, this time permanently in Paris, where he reached full maturity after meeting André Breton, Raymond Queneau and Jorge Luis Borges. Two drawings by Rozsda dating from 1959-1960 were presented in 2024 by the Centre Pompidou as part of the major Surrealism Centenary exhibition.
