Damian VALDES DILLA [Cuban] (b. 1970)
Ville enflammée, Biblioteca, 2016
Ballpoint pen, colored pencil and graphite on paper.
Signed and dated at foot.
48.5 x 70 cm

Provenance :
Collection Jean-Jacques Plaisance, Galerie Les Yeux Fertiles, Paris.

Damian Valdes Dilla, having left school at the age of 17 due to serious psychological problems, returned to live with his mother in a small apartment in Havana after an unsuccessful marriage. In this environment, he finds an escape by constructing architectural structures, such as buildings, towers and apartment blocks, as well as flying vehicles, using salvaged materials.
From 2014, Damian ventured into a new artistic field, drawing meticulously detailed and ordered cities. These drawings stand in stark contrast to the chaos of his earlier assemblages. In his representations, he seems to seek order and structure, in contrast to the chaotic material world in which he lives. These drawn cities perhaps reveal his quest for stability and control in an inner world disrupted by his psychic struggles.
His works can be found at the Musée National d'Art Moderne and in the abcd collection.
