Jean-Gabriel Domergue (1899-1962) Opera Saturday, June 24, 1922. Grand Prix Ball. 1922. Lithograph. [387x590]. Printed in color. Very fine proof on ivory vellum, lined on heavy vellum and canvas-backed. Full margins. A great lover of festivities, the 23-year-old Domergue organized the "Bal des mille beautés" at the Opéra on June 24, 1922, on the theme of 18th-century Venice: the huge stage was draped in black velvet, and the edges of the boxes were adorned with antique tapestries and large golden shawls. An elegant audience, wearing Venetian hats, cloaks and gowns, makes this a grand spectacle and a critically acclaimed total work of art. Until 1960, the artist was an arbiter of elegance and organizer of famous parties.
