*Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) The Deploration of the Dead Christ (Pl. of the Great Passion). Circa 1498-1499. Woodcut. 280 x 385. Bartsch 13; Meder 122 b; Strauss 60. Very fine proof on laid paper (watermark: ox head and snake, Meder 81), before the text on the reverse, predating the 1511 edition, with the fine vertical break in the wood across Christ's foot, also perceptible in the face of the woman on the left, carefully washed. Persistent traces of horizontal and vertical folds on verso. Margin fillets. Ex-coll. Roger Passeron (Lugt 4096), formerly purchased from Galerie Prouté, Cambiaso catalog, 1961, no. 42. "The Carrying of the Cross and La Déploration date from 1498-1499; more monumental and legible, these scenes are closer to the more classical images of The Apocalypse. They were sold in sheets by Dürer, before he embarked on a more complete publishing project in 1511, when he had just bought his own presses and wished to publish his large series, adding to them as necessary." (M. Deldicque, "La Grande Passion", in M. Deldicque and C. Vrand, Dürer, Gravure et Renaissance, exhibition cat., In Fine éditions d'art et musée de Chantilly, 2022, p. 157).
