ÉLUARD] Maurice MENDJIZKI, Hommage aux combattants martyrs du ghetto de Varsovie. Édition des Boulingrins, Monaco, 1964. In-folio slipcase, numbered edition. Copy no. 18. Thirty-five drawings by Maurice Mendjizki, accompanied by an unpublished poem by Paul Éluard, a text by Vercors, and a biography of the artist by André Salmon. "The subject! The artist is put in prison. His wife was deported. One of his twenty-year-old sons was shot. In Warsaw, Jews were exterminated en masse in their ghetto. This is the subject..." "I know that Picasso thought long and hard about Mendjizki's horror plates and did not spare his praise... the work about which Picasso could evoke Goya; the work conceived, pursued, completed in the worst moral and physical pain; these plates on which the artist's last breath was exhaled" (André Salmon).
