Adolphe FEDER, illustrator (1886-1943) Jérôme et Jean THARAUD, L'ombre de la croix. Paris, Éditions Mornay, 1932.
In-8, half-chagrin binding by Adrien Lavaux, covers preserved, spine ribbed, numbered copy on Rives.
In L'Ombre de la Croix, the Tharaud brothers recount the life of the Jews in the shtetl, with their feet in the mud, their heads in the clouds and their tongues firmly in their mouths. In 1919, Paul Souday, the columnist for Le Temps, judged L'Ombre de la Croix to be "a document of the first order", presenting, in novel form, "a picture of the poor Jewish villages of Hungary and Galicia, whose inhabitants are even more strongly attached to their millennia-old traditions".
Beautifully illustrated by the Russian-born Jewish painter Aizik Adolphe Feder, one of the painters of the École de Paris, who died in deportation in 1943.
