TALMUD] [E. M. PINNER, translator] Treatise Berakhot of the Babylonian Talmud. Berlin, 1842. Aramaic and German facing each other, each on one page. First edition.
In-folio, half cloth binding in used condition.
At the head of the book, a page of dedication to Tsar Nicholas I and a six-page list of subscribers. The list of subscribers includes Nicholas I for one hundred copies, as well as the kings of Prussia, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, etc.
This translation gave rise to such controversy that the Hatam Sofer, who had initially given his imprimatur, withdrew his agreement and asked the translator to give up publishing his book. The translator preferred to forgo the Hatam Sofer's endorsement and published his book without his imprimatur.
