TALMUD] S. Halikhot Olam (Itinera Aeterna) sive Clavis talmudica ... latine reddita per Constantinum l'Empereur ab Oppyck. Leiden, Elzevir, 1634.
First Latin edition.
Small in-4. Full vellum binding, cold decoration. One board damaged. Beautiful bilingual edition in Latin and Hebrew of this introduction to Talmudic studies.
This book on the laws of the Talmud comprises two works. The first, entitled Halichot Olam, is the work of Rabbi Yehoshua Ha-Levy ben Yosef. It is followed by an introduction to the Talmud written by Rabbi Shmuel Ha-Nagguid. The work is considered one of the most important in its field. The first edition of the book was printed in 1490, followed by eleven other editions in Hebrew and only one that combines a Latin translation, proposed here. The importance of this book can be deduced from Rabbi Gedaliah ibn Yichya's testament to his son, as printed in his book, Shalshelet HaKabbalah: "Do not forget, my son, to study the book Halichot Olam at least twice a year, [in order] to reveal the mysteries of its rules..."
Rabbi Chmouel Ha-Nagguid, the author of the second book, is a colorful character. He was vizier and head of the armies of the Kingdom of Granada, as well as Nagguid (prince) of the Jewish community of Granada. A patron of Ibn Gabirol, he corresponded with Rabenu Haï Gaon and Rabenu Nissim of Kairouan.
