Léon de MODÈNE, Cérémonies et coutumes qui s'observent aujourd'hui parmi les Juifs. Paris, chez Louis Billaine, 1674. In-12, (15.3 × 9 cm) of [52] 300 pp. Bound in modern full leather, spine ribbed. Ex-libris Jacques Zemmour. First edition of this translation by Richard Simon, one of France's first apostles of tolerance (he defended the Jews of Metz falsely accused of ritual crime) and a great biblical exegete. Published in Paris in Italian in 1637, the book by the Venetian rabbi Leon of Modena, a testimony to Judaism against fanaticism, was part of the current of rediscovery of the East, foreign peoples and non-Christian religions. Translated in 1674 by the Hebraizing scholar Richard Simon. This 1674 edition is rarer than the following editions: Zosa Szajkowski points to six other editions between 1681 and 1710 as testimony to the book's success. To ensure its dissemination in France, the great scholar and Hebraist Richard Simon translated it and published it in 1674. He preceded it with a preface in which he demonstrated his remarkable knowledge of Judaism and underlined his interest in the Jewish people as a Catholic theologian and scholar. To fill the gaps in the Venetian rabbi's book, he added two important supplements to his translation, one devoted to the Karaites (Jews who relied exclusively on Scripture and, as such, seemed to him to foreshadow the Protestants), the other to the Samaritans. Keywords: judaica, jew, jewish, hebrew, rabbis, jewish, torah, hebrew, hebraica, judaism, synagogue, zionism, pessah, pessach, haggada, haggadah, hagada, hagadah, passover, menora, menorah, hannuka, hannuca, hannucca, hanouccah, torah, juden, israélite, Israël, antisemitism, antisémitisme, dreyfus, meguila, sepharade, sefarad, ketouba
