Samuel Klein, chief rabbi of Colmar and uncompromising champion of orthodoxy, was opposed to religious reform. He opposed the introduction of the organ in synagogues. Deemed too orthodox, he was an unsuccessful competitor of the future Chief Rabbi of France for the post of Chief Rabbi of Paris, and later for the post of Chief Rabbi of France.
