MENASSEH BEN ISRAEL, De Ressurectione Mortuorum Libri 3. Amsterdam, 1636. In-12, bound in modern full leather, angular restorations to first few leaves; trimmed short to table leaves, which are without outer margins. Sought-after first edition of one of the first books printed "at his own expense and on his own presses (Typis et Sumptibus Auctoris)" by the famous Amsterdam rabbi, printer and diplomat, who was one of Spinoza's teachers and who negotiated with Cromwell the return of the Jews to England, from which they had been expelled in 1291. The small-bodied Hebrew characters of this book are as precise as those of the Bibles printed by Menasseh ben Israël. In 1626, Menasseh founded the first Hebrew printing house in Amsterdam, named Emeth Me-Erets Titsma'h. The printer's symbol, in the form of a magic square in Hebrew, appears on the title page. Menasseh is the author of numerous works on Hebrew theology, including Nishmat Haïm, on the reincarnation of the soul, and Le Conciliateur, written to reconcile contradictions in Bible passages. The text is dedicated to Laurent Reael, former governor of the Compagnie des Indes, and Albert Conrad, former ambassador of the United Provinces to Moscow. Keywords: judaica, jew, jewish, hebrew, rabbis, jewish, torah, hebrew, hebraica, judaism, synagogue, zionism, pessah, pessach, haggada, haggadah, hagada, hagadah, passover, menora, menorah, hannuka, hannuca, hannucca, hanouccah, torah, juden, israélite, Israël, antisemitism, antisémitisme, dreyfus, meguila, sepharade, sefarad, ketouba
