BIBLE] Rav S. CAHEN, La Bible, traduction nouvelle avec l'hébreu en regard accompagné des points-voyelles et des accents toniques avec des notes philologiques, géographiques et littéraires. Paris, 1836-1846.
19 volumes in-8, half-leather binding.
Fine condition.
This is the first French Jewish translation of the entire Jewish biblical canon. Subsequent translations would refer to it, either in conformity with it or to distance themselves from it. Footnotes are based on archaeology, geography, philology, Semitic studies, biblical criticism and textual criticism.

Here's the author's assessment of his translation: "This translation of the Bible, whose imperfections no one can see more than I, is nonetheless unique in that it has always aimed for the greatest fidelity, and in that, within a framework that is naturally restricted, the notes that accompany it contain the quintessence of the exegetical work of the ancients and the moderns.
By drawing on rabbinic commentaries, we believe we have rendered a number of services. These commentaries are inaccessible to anyone who has not devoted a large part of his life to them. No matter how much we understand the biblical text, that alone is not enough to understand these commentaries. The rabbis are still the ones who have best understood the Bible..." (Foreword to his translation of the Bible). (Foreword to his translation of Job).
The only commented Hebrew Bible published in the 19th century. An immense work! "Cahen quotes the traditional biblical exegetes (Rachi, Ibn Ezra), but adds all the notes that an orientalist would make concerning the latest discoveries in archaeology, ethnology... He also asks collaborators (including Salomon Munk) for "supplements" on the Hebrew calendar or the history of civilizations", explains Francine Kaufmann. Several volumes of this Bible include supplements. Her work paved the way for the translation of the Bible by the French rabbinate under the direction of Zadok Kahn.
