[HEBRAIC BIBLE] [Biblia hebraica cum notis]. Paris: Robert Estienne, 1539-1544.
24 parts in 2 volumes in-4. Full 17th-century basane bindings in used condition. Spines decorated with attributes, marbled edges.
One leaf partially detached, old notes in margins. Light spotting on some leaves. Spine of first volume missing. 4 leaves of Daniel inverted but present. The last leaf of Daniel torn without missing margin. Small paper losses in margins, especially in the book of Yoel. Worm work in Malachi with loss of a few letters.
Apart from the above-mentioned defects, this extremely rare Hebrew Bible printed by Robert Estienne is in fine condition inside.
This Bible was printed between 1539 and 1544 and divided into different parts, each with its own title and pagination. These parts were either sold together or separately, which explains why some copies are incomplete and the order in which they are bound may vary.
This edition was sumptuously printed using typefaces from various Parisian fonts, notably those of Jean Arnould. It earned Robert Estienne an appointment by François I as the king's printer of Hebrew and Latin letters.
