Important document on the history of Jews in Strasbourg in the seventeenth century. Strasbourg forbade all Jews to reside in the city, but by common necessity, they continued to enter the city to trade. They had to pay an entrance fee and were not allowed to stay overnight. The distinctive ringing of the Gruselhorn told them to get out of town. Strangely enough, this ringing continues to this day. From 1639 onwards, the town even required Jews to be accompanied by a guard to ensure that they did not engage in any prohibited trade.
