MANUSCRIT- NORDAU] Max NORDAU (1849-1923)
The League of Nations, circa 1917-1918.
Autograph manuscript, later signed. Text in French.
7 numbered p., 27 x 21 cm, tears at folds with loss of 2 letters.
Important article on what the League of Nations should be, its role and the difficulties it will have to face. Among the difficulties Nordau identifies are those encountered to date by the UN, the successor organization to the League of Nations: "To establish the League of Nations, to proclaim the reign of justice among its members, nothing could be better. But who will be responsible for imposing the moral law and forcing those who refuse to submit to it? "Well, the Hague court is a solemn joke. It couldn't prevent anything, and we're laughing out loud at it, its sentences and its injunctions. A code of international legislation binding on all civilized peoples? It was drafted by the Peace Conference and signed by just about every autonomous state in both hemispheres. Who did it serve? These codes have also been treated as a rag and sat on. "The League of Nations can only ensure peace through war, and what a war it is! Nordau's visionary genius was to propose a solution. It's this solution that concludes his article: "There is only one way, only one way, to exterminate war and to establish the reign, I don't say of justice, but of legality? It is the education of peoples in their effective sovereignty, the advancement of the great majority of citizens of all countries to a degree of moral and intellectual development that enables them to understand their true interests, to decide their own destinies and to make their will prevail. The method is infallible. Only it is slow, desperately slow.
