MANUSCRITS] Max NORDAU (1849-1923)
Les amourettes célèbres
Autograph manuscript, titled and signed. Madrid, August 5. Text in French.
7 p. in-4 numbered (27 x 21 cm). Complete manuscript.
In this manuscript, Nordau takes advantage of his review of a book by Louis Barthou, in which Barthou studies the love affairs of Sainte-Beuve and Madame Victor Hugo, to express his disapproval of those who, like Sainte-Beuve, shamelessly destroy a marriage:
"In this story, Sainte-Beuve appears as a very sad sire. He arrives in Paris from the provinces, unknown, a mere beginner in the world of letters, and is generously welcomed by the already glorious Victor Hugo. He befriended him, became a familiar figure in his household, and took advantage of the opportunity to bring dishonor to it by distracting his wife from her duty".
Nordau goes on to lament tolerance, which in his view "is not justified when it pretends to amuse us with stories about the whims of notorious people".
He ends his critique with a powerful formula:
"And what a disservice we do to the memory of authors whose more or less dirty distractions we thus detail. We never enhance them, we often diminish them, and we sometimes irreparably dishonor them.
