Max NORDAU - ZIONISM]
L.A.S. dated August 1909 in German. This letter is addressed by Jakob Landhart to Max Nordau. Jakob Landhart was president of the Chewra in Baden bei Wien.
17 pp. in-8 numbered. KKL stamps depicting Herzl and Nordau are pasted on the first page.

Letter on the subject of the Zionist project: Landhart mentions that the Zionist party has not become a popular party in which even Zangwill could participate, but has become an intolerant party. He deplores the conflict between the ideal and reality of a political party and its compromises. He regrets that the Zionist party is stagnating because it cannot convince the religious masses, especially in Vienna.
So far, the effort towards assimilated Jews has been successful, but unfortunately Orthodox Jews only know Zionism by name.
What's more, the religious sensibilities of these Jews have been publicly flouted: at the Zionist office, people work on Saturdays; Zionist associations organize Saturday outings.
The atmosphere is so atheistic that Orthodox fathers refuse to allow their children to attend. Landhart, though not Orthodox, believes that religion is a private matter. Getting closer to the religious is, in his view, a political necessity. Can Zionism do without Orthodoxy? Can Nordau use his influence to change the situation?
