MANUSCRIT] Max NORDAU (1849-1923) Der Sinn der Geschichte Autograph manuscript, titled and signed. In German, it reads: written from September 1906 to April 1909 and published on June 24, 1909. An in-quarto volume of 194 numbered pp. on linen paper, of which only the rectos are used, mounted on tabs. Bound in red half-maroquin with muted spine. Important first draft manuscript. Numerous erasures and corrections punctuate the text. This manuscript and its numerous corrections are important for understanding the genesis of Max Nordau's thinking on the meaning of human history. For him, history is not only determined by material or economic forces, but above all by the importance of ideas and moral values in the development of societies. He argues that history is largely shaped by struggles for justice, truth and morality, and that these elements give meaning to historical events. This view of the formation of history remains relevant to this day.
