MANUSCRIT] Max NORDAU (1849-1923) Morganatisch Autograph manuscript, titled and signed. An in-quarto volume of 303 pp. numbered on paper, of which only the rectos have been used, sheets mounted on tabs, bound in half red morocco with muted spine. Important first draft manuscript. This novel, published in 1883, was not as successful as his later essay Entartung. Nevertheless, in a novel that describes the complex love affair between a noblewoman and a man of inferior rank, Nordau examines the workings of society and the injustices that permeate its hierarchical structure. The novel contains a social critique, presenting characters torn between their personal will and what they owe to society. This literary work, which explores the themes of love, sacrifice and social inequality, is as topical as ever, and deserves to be translated into French.
