The story of Eldad Ha-Dani is that of a ninth-century merchant who claims to be a descendant of the tribe of Dan and to come from the land where the ten tribes are said to have been exiled. As well as recounting his wanderings, he gives an account of the application of Torah in his tribe. This account was initially accepted as authentic by leading rabbinic authorities, before being called into question by modern critics.
