POSTER - BAYONNE] Imperial decree concerning Jews who do not have a fixed surname and first name. Bayonne, July 20, 1808. Avignon, À Saint-Lô, de l'Imprimerie de J. Élie, s.d. (1808). Poster in plano in French, engraved at the head with a fine vignette depicting the coat of arms of the Emperor of the French and printed on three columns. Small margin marks at the corners and folded in four, otherwise a fine copy of a rare poster. It defines the rules governing the opening and use of census registers of Jewish individuals in imperial France. Article 3 of the poster stipulates that Jews may not adopt surnames taken from the Old Testament. This prohibition reflects Napoleon's desire to assimilate the Jews. Szajkowski (Judaica-Napoleonica, 142) only knows of this edition from Saint-Lô and another from Pau in poster form.
